Airways International Ltd (AIL) is the commercial arm of Airways New Zealand – providing training, digital products, aeronautical information management, procedure design and aviation consultancy services globally to air navigation service providers (ANSPs), airlines and airports.

PLEASE NOTE: This training is available for New Zealand citizens & permanent residents, and Australian citizens only. 

If you are successful through our testing as part of our selection process for the training programme, you will be required to attend a one-day assessment centre in Christchurch in February 2023.

Training for successful candidates will begin in our Christchurch training centre in April 2023. Students will spend 8-9 months training in Christchurch, before relocating to one of our air traffic control towers across the country, for on-the-job training.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Please be advised that this is a training programme. Below information is for your reference:

Pay for air traffic controllers varies depending on where they work, their experience and their duties. Pay includes a base salary plus superannuation, shift work allowances and other benefits.

  • New air traffic controllers working at regional airports usually start at $95,000 a year.
  • Experienced air traffic controllers usually earn up to $200,000.
  • Air traffic controllers who work at the radar centres in Auckland and Christchurch can earn $160,000 to $200,000.
