Working Hours at Baker McKenzie

How flexible is your company when it comes to hours?
The hours can be long, but the company is generally very flexible. For example, most people have a very 'swings and roundabouts' type attitude - when times are busy, you're expected to put in the work, but when it's quiet, you're generally encouraged to not work more than a 9-5 or even to take some time in lieu. Also, there is a lot of respect for anything you have on - e.g., if you have a dinner or event, people will always do their best to make sure you can make it.

Flexibility depends on your supervising partner but most are generally quite accommodating. As with any other law firm, the hours can be a bit unpredictable and long sometimes.

The office runs on a 60-40 basis. Usually that means people have the option to work 2 days from home. Otherwise, hours are usually quite flexible.

I work 8-6 most days, though in previous teams I worked more like 8-10. It all depends how busy the team is. I personally am happy to work longer hours as long as there is a real need for it, but no one will force you to work long hours.

typically somewhat busy, but very flexible with needing to finish early or start late

My hours are very manageable, all things considered. Despite being busy, I don't find that I have to stay back late as nothing tends to be that urgent that it cannot wait until the morning. I appreciate that the firm and my colleagues recognise this reality, as it ensures that I do not burn out.
