What’s your job about?
As a Consultant, my job is about helping clients solve their business problems. Typically, I work in a team with other developers and a Project Manager. My job varies day to day which can involve coding, gathering requirements or presenting the solution to the client.
What’s your background?
Before joining Empired I had a different career. I previously studied at the University of Wollongong completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Geology. Following my studies, I spent several years living in small country towns working in the mining industry. During my time in the mining industry, my job varied from exploration, resource modelling and scheduling a small fleet of trucks and diggers.
While working as a geologist I developed an interest in coding. Eventually, I made a big decision and decided to go back to university and studied computer science at the University of Queensland. After a couple of interviews and a fun coding exercise, I was offered a role at Empired and the rest is history.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
If you have a curiosity and love of learning, programming may be perfect for you! Throughout my time working at Empired I have met many developers with unique backgrounds including engineers, mathematicians and even someone who studied languages at university.
There are so many resources out there to get started with. For those working in a different industry that want to get into programming the best thing you can do is to start learning and to implement small solutions in your current job. Is there a task you do every day that can be automated?
What’s the coolest thing you have done since starting at Empired?
This one is difficult to answer. Honestly, I have had many great moments, from work social events to the graduate bootcamp in Perth. However, I believe the coolest thing I have done was building the very first custom visual for PowerBI that Empired has ever developed. It was a great feeling reducing the work required for a client to build an extremely detailed visual from 2 days to less than a minute.
What are the limitations of your job?
The biggest limitation is that the industry is forever changing and requires you to constantly upskill as new technologies are released. It is not a job where your education stops once you have finished university, you will forever be learning. Personally, I spend a couple of hours a week of my own time trying to expand my current skill set.
