Pros & Cons

  • Great support from the entire organisation. Meaningful work as well.
  • It is a very friendly environment, with so much support. Everyone has been happy to help and answer any questions I have. The work arrangements are flexible.
  • There is a good work-life balance culture, and you are encouraged to bring your whole self to work. Diversity and inclusion are highly valued.
  • Doing meaningful and valuable work that can have a direct impact on the community.
  • Variety of work and teams. Regularly moving to different jobs and interacting with different client groups and teams within the organisation. This happens often enough to keep things interesting, but not so often it's hard to keep up.
  • Working in the public sector is satisfying, no negatives are immediately apparent to me.
  • It can be a bit stressful during final.
  • Everything is confidential so you can't talk about the interesting things you learn.
  • It is an audit job, so it can be monotonous at times. You need to have a keen eye for discrepancies and double check your work continuously. It's not a career for everyone.
  • Waiting for clients to provide documentation to continue the audit.

There is huge room for growth in QAO. There are so many women in different leadership positions that you can look up to as well. QAO is also very invested in our interests and learning opportunities. They will try to schedule in opportunities to try different types of audits (financial, performance etc.) and get exposure to areas of the business that we are interested in.

We are a public service organisation. Everything we do is focused on keeping the government and its subsidiaries accountable and delivering the best services they can to the public. We are also encouraged to participate in community events such as charity events and the like, with paid leave provided in many instances to facilitate these. These sorts of events are promoted within the office as well.

Office culture is positive and welcoming. Within the office there is an air of friendly professionalism. It is a flexible workplace and people are respecting of each other's circumstances. I have made plenty of friends within the organisation and social events after hours are common and fun. The graduate program works well to get you in contact with plenty of people in the same position as you.

Satisfaction
My day-to-day has gotten more interesting with time, working on more and more complex activities. I feel like my brain is stimulated and I'm working on dynamic issues. Sometimes this is broken up by short periods of repetitive easier tasks, but this is more refreshing than boring.

Management

Management
The managers are fantastic and very invested in the grad program. Everyone, no matter their position, will always make themselves available to you for support or just a catch up. All grads have a designated staff manager that they don't work with and are available to have performance and professional development conversations.

Office Work Environment

Office Work Environment
The office space is open plan and uses designated areas. It uses a hot-desk approach in which teams can sit in any cluster of desks and work together by connecting their laptops to which desk they like. The office is clean and modern, with windows going around and an open feeling. There are also designated quiet areas and meeting rooms which allow privacy and louder separate conversations. Oftentimes work is done from client sites or when it is not necessary to work from an office, working from home is widely accepted and accommodated. The dress code is smart casual, depending on if you have a client meeting.
