The Story of Amgen Australia

Amgen (Applied Molecular Genetics Inc.) is an American multinational biopharmaceutical company established on April 8, 1980. Headquartered in California, their scientists attempted many things for the first three years: from growing chickens faster to making specialty chemicals to cloning the light source of fireflies. However, the final direction for the company is treating and curing disease.

In 1989, Amgen went international by establishing its European headquarters in Switzerland. Over the next few years, it established offices across Europe, including a manufacturing and distribution centre in the Netherlands.

Amgen employs hundreds of scientists, and their medicines typically address diseases for which there are limited treatment options. Although the company’s product line is relatively small (around 26 products), it is one of the world's largest biotechnology companies today, with a presence in about 100 countries and regions worldwide.

Headquartered in Sydney, Amgen Australia was established in 1991. However, Amgen’s clinical trial activity in Australia dates back even before that. Australia is one of the most trusted destinations in the world for Amgen research. In 2021, Amgen Australia participated in around 52% of Amgen’s early development studies, more than anywhere outside the United States.
