  • Recruitment & HR

Sharp & Carter is more than just another recruitment agency. We are a team of individuals who aspire to change the way the recruitment industry is perceived and who believe that success can be achieved by putting people’s interests first.

What makes us different

Sharp & Carter finds and attracts the best talent in the market and delivers people-focused solutions for some of Australia’s leading companies.

A partnership in structure and in values, Sharp & Carter is managed on the guiding principles of Care, Generosity, Trust and Humility. Our belief is that when our team is empowered, we become better people for our customers to engage with. We go beyond the duty of care in the recruitment business. Not because we have to, but because it's who we are and how we do business.

We genuinely live our values of Excellence, Integrity, Partnership and Enjoyment.

S&C Values

Excellence: We aim to empower our team to focus on sourcing excellent candidates for our clients and ideal jobs for our candidates. We aim to always pursue excellence, rather than simply aiming to be better than our competition.

Integrity: We aim to create an environment where our team can be themselves so they can act with integrity in everything they do. We hire genuine people who focus on the principles of openness, trust, and respect.

Partnership: We aim to approach our partnership internally and externally with a long-term view. We seek to be flexible with, and responsive to, our clients and to challenge each other to secure win/win outcomes.

Enjoyment: We aim to enjoy the people with whom we work and believe that in turn clients and candidates will enjoy working with us. We aim high and together enjoy the journey of achieving our goals.

Our corporate social responsibility initiatives

Recent examples of Sharp & Carter supporting social responsibility initiatives include:

  • Acacia Connection GROW Program

What candidates value most about Sharp & Carter

The Sharp & Carter Way is in place to ensure all of our dealings with customers are driven from a place of care and respect.

The Sharp & Carter Way:

  • Doing the basics of recruitment well
  • Returning phone calls
  • Always answering the phone
  • Responding to all applications
  • Being respectful and empathetic to customers
  • Understanding that people are vulnerable when searching for work and it is one of the most important times in their life
  • Understanding that if you treat people poorly, they will remember you for the wrong reasons
  • Retaining staff to ensure less turnover which ensures that candidates are dealing with the same person for a long period of time
  • Having mutual respect internally and externally.
  • Being generous
  • Always striving for win/win outcomes
  • Always advise the candidate on how they can improve their chances of finding a role through CV advice, how to improve their interview style etc
  • Always stay positive and encourage candidates on their job search, as they are looking to you for motivation.

Recruitment Process

Step 1 - The application must include a current CV, we recommended including ATAR and GAP/WAM scores. A cover letter is optional, however, if included it must be specific to the role. For example, it must be addressed to the correct company and feature the title of the role you are applying for to show your interest.

Step 2 - You may receive an email to set up a time to speak or a phone call directly. This would usually be a 10–15-minute chat. The aim of this conversation is to get to know you and bring your CV to life. Be yourself, as culture is key at Sharp & Carter this is what we are hoping for during this call.

Step 3 - There are two pathways from here, depending on a few factors. Most commonly if successful at this stage you'll be invited to a Graduate Day with Sharp & Carter. This is a half-day session in which you will meet several people across the business and take part in short informal interviews and activities. Again, we just want to get to know you and see if you'll jump in and give the activities a go - so just be yourself! If not a Graduate Day, the alternative pathway is online or face to face interviews with a few people from the team.

Step 4 - Psychometric Assessment. At Sharp & Carter, we do both personality and emotional intelligence assessments. These are very common now and are a great insight into a range of things including the best management style to suit you and which team you could be the best fit for culturally.  These are not used as a ‘Yes or No’ recruitment tool, but rather an extension of our traditional recruitment methods.

You are likely to still have an informal meet and greets after this process, to meet the team members you will be working with closely.

The Selection Criteria

Sharp & Carter are seeking graduate students who must be self-motivated, dynamic, driven and have a strong work ethic. You will have excellent communication skills and an interest in a career in recruitment.

Sharp & Carter has been built on the values of Excellence, Integrity, Partnership and Enjoyment with a strong team focus, and is managed on the guiding principles of Trust, Generosity, Care and Humility. Anyone who has similar values and ideals is encouraged to apply.

Remuneration & Career Growth

The Sharp & Carter remuneration model has been designed to encourage consultants to provide high levels of service to our candidates and clients, as well as to promote teamwork within the firm by rewarding individual performance and recognising when consultants assist each other through an equitable and transparent set of guidelines.

Base salaries start at 50k plus super. This does not include our bonus structure.

Bonuses are paid to consultants to recognise and reward performance. Bonuses are calculated on performance and are inclusive of superannuation. A consultant must first bill their quarterly threshold to qualify for a bonus.

We also have a commitment to retaining our talent and provide a bonus at 5 years to reward the length of service.

Career Pathway

We have a clear and transparent career progression path. Interns and graduates will go through a structured, bespoke training program with the aim of developing the fundamental skill set for a recruitment consultant. These programs include on the job training, quantitative targets and a real insight into 360-degree recruitment.

We offer opportunities with the hope our interns and graduates will progress through our career pathway and remain at Sharp & Carter. For example, a part-time intern that may still be studying may get the opportunity to progress into a Graduate Consultant permanent/full time. A Graduate Consultant is likely to progress onto a Recruitment Consultant once they have successfully completed their program.

Following this, there are further opportunities to progress through to Senior Consultant, Manager, Director and even Partner. Progression to these positions is not based on tenure, rather progression through our career pathway steps, meaning how long you have been with us is not the only factor considered in progression.

To progress within Sharp & Carter we evaluate many holistic factors, including but not limited to; your alignment with S&C behaviours and values, relationship management (internal and external), goal setting and meeting, planning and time management, sales skills and building profitability, communication and perseverance.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Sharp & Carter is a wonderful company to work for, the supportive, inclusive and friendly culture starts at the top and trickles all the way down. Everyone you speak to will take time to get to know you and make you feel welcome.
  • Working with empowering and supportive women, and knowing I am contributing to a business making a difference.
  • The company culture, the support and the team bonding/extracurricular activities.
  • It's a growing company. Through working remotely, due to Covid, it doesn’t feel as personal or connected as initially thought.
  • Working with a large business where you don't always know who is a part of which team.
  • Sometimes it is tough working in the lesser established part of the business, as our needs are different due to our market.
