Pros & Cons

  • The people that I work with are generally pretty incredible. The highest people in the company have a lot of time for you no matter what level you are, and I get along extremely well with all of my colleagues.
  • The variety of work at hand (particularly if you're interested in the public sector) that keeps things interesting - Opportunities for growth and progression - Great culture with very smart and kind people - Working on projects that have a positive social impact
  • The training and support
  • Having such a strong culture of support and understanding makes you feel recognised. This includes the freedom to work autonomously and a structure where you're encouraged to reach out and start conversations. Moreover, everyone similarly invested in doing work that has a positive impact, which is quite a buoying feeling.
  • The time pressure Resourcing (sometimes you may be over resourced onto projects)
  • There is a high workload which can mean long hours
  • It is fast-paced, at times this can be draining. But I usually find this quite motivating.
  • Having the responsibility to self-manage can at time be overwhelming, particularly if you aren't used to the format or are not at a place with your direct managers where you feel comfortable communicating accurate boundaries.

Highly transparent promotion process, dependent on your charge-out rate passing a certain threshold. Charge-out rate increases are dependent on your development in line with the roles and responsibilities expected of your role and based on feedback given by the people you work with.

Personally I work in the health and human service area. I have worked on many projects that benefit the community including reviews of homelessness programs, aged care services and mental health services. Nous partners with Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) to deliver mentor programs to low socio-economic status schools to develop student's confidence, skills and aspirations vital for thriving in the workplace of the future.

Culture

Culture
I have never worked somewhere where I feel so able to be myself, and where there is almost nobody with whom I don't get on or who I dislike. We are encouraged to take sick leave if we need it, and 'recharge' leave if we have gone through a period of working very long hours (this does not come out of our annual leave). I feel many of the senior people in our company really care about us, and I feel comfortable discussing my problems and career progression with my personal performance coach. Company finances are shared openly with everyone, and we have a lot of input into things such as office refurbishment and layout etc.

Diversity

Diversity
We have a high portion of females in our company, and I have never felt that there has been any bias or discrimination based on gender. We also have groups within Nous that are dedicated to diverse cohorts, e.g., a Pride group and a Reconciliation Group. From what I have observed, our child care and maternity arrangements are amazing, and I think there is even a 'parents in Nous' group. I know Nous makes a big effort to recruit people with diverse backgrounds, whether it is diverse culture, ethnicity, experience, gender, sexuality - I have never witnessed any discrimination here. Nous collaborates with CareerTrackers to provide paid internship opportunities to Indigenous students. CareerTrackers honoured Nous with a 2019 Most Valued Partner Award. We also partner with the Aurora Education Foundation, creating an employment pathway for participants in its programs. Nous partners with JobSupport, a specialist service that places people with an intellectual disability in the workforce. Over the years, Nous has employed several JobSupport employees across Australia.

While the day-to-day responsibilities are standard for the industry, having such tight-knit teams and variety of projects means that you learn a lot from great people in a short amount of time.

Very satisfied with my managers. Every consultant is given a performance coach who monitors their performance and is the main vehicle through which feedback is given to you (e.g. at pay-cycles or at your 3 and 5-month check ins). You'll also have project managers on your projects who you'll work with more closely in your day-to-day and give you feedback on your specific project work.

Office is located on St George's Terrace (main business street in Perth) There are end of trip facilities, a gym and eateries in our building. Dress code: you can wear whatever you want if you are not interacting with clients (T-shirt, boardies and thongs are fine). If interacting with clients the dress code is smart casual.

Recruitment
I had three interviews: the first was an introductory interview with HR that was more focused on you as an individual and your interest in Nous; the second consisted of a verbal case study and written component, as well as situational questions; and the third also consisted of a verbal case study and further questions about you. All interviews were conducted virtually and with different people in the organisation. Vaguely I remember them asking me a set of professional and personal questions. They wanted to gauge me as a person and not just what I'm capable of. Having an understanding of what makes Nous unique is key, as that's the real differentiator between this firm and others. Additionally, aiming to authentically answer questions - especially general ones relating to culture - will help both you and your interviewer understand if you'll actually enjoy working here.

The pay is solid for a graduate role (higher than big 4, lower than top management consulting firms) and the company bonus is shared throughout the organisation based on the organisation's performance for the financial year. Small technology allowance, free snacks and drinks. Self-management means you can choose to work from home depending on your client obligations.

Training
We had a 4 week induction to get up to speed when we started which was useful. Unfortunately due to covid it was online, but they did a good job trying to make it engaging online. We have access to training on e.g., coding/data if we want to use it - it is up to us if we want to improve on these skills or not. However, it is hard to find the time to do this. There are videos and a lot of information available on our internal website which are amazingly useful and we have 'savvy sessions' on certain topics every few months which are recorded. Learning on the job is my best way to learn, and the good relationship with PMs and PDs makes this really effective.

Very flexible within reason - the onus is on you to manage your time and communicate with your team to deliver on critical deadlines. There are also a variety of different policies to help flex time in ways that best work for you.
